Northern New Jersey: A Sasqutach Favorite
Expedition in Wawayanda State Park
State: New Jersey
County: Sussex (The County in red)
Portion of NJ: Northern NJ
Amount of Time: 6 Hours
Month/Day/Year: October 11, 2008
Background Information: Wawayanda State Park is located in the most northern part of New Jersey. Being right on the border with upstate New York, it comprises of 16,647 acres of wooded land, marshes, and other wildlife habitat. The forest continues into New York. Some animals native to the region are coyotes, Red foxes, turkeys, and eagles. While we were there, we also caught sight of Black bears. Sussex County has been the scene for many alleged Bigfoot sightings; some mysterious, others terrifying. In fact, in the summer of 1998, a creature screamed every single night for quite some time. Many described it as nothing they had ever heard. Animals also behaved rather aggressively, with continues barking, and unexplained fear. To read the full article, click here.
Expedition Details: The park was truly massive. At times, we would see no other people for hours on end. At one point in time, we hadn't seen another person for one hour and a half. So, this park really is enormous. About two hours into our hike, we were in a densely forested area. I decided to try some wood knocking. I picked up a very thick, short log and hit it a few times against a tree. About one minute later, to my astonishment, and shock, I heard wood knocking in return. Now remember, we hadn't seen another living soul for quite some time. Afterwards, we walked on the edge of a huge and truly beautiful lake, still inside the mountain. Suddenly, we heard wood knocking again, and this time, it was too close for comfort. It came from the very top of the mountain. The wood knocking stopped for a bit, and we heard something relatively big move, and then it continued yet again. After we had distanced ourselves from the location, it stopped.
What Do these Results Suggest? Based on the events which took place during our expedition, it is highly probably that Bigfoot does indeed exist.
Was the wood knocking an actual Bigfoot, or another human simply playing a hoax? It is impossible to say whether or not the wood knocking came from a human, or an unknown primate. One fact is clear and certain: there were no other known people in the area. We heard no other people talking. The wood knocking response was spontaneous.
Is the wood knocking itself fake? Couldn't it just be a woodpecker? This is where many questions are raised. When we were in the dense forest, it definitely wasn't a woodpecker. You could hear a huge, thick stick being hit against a tree. There is absolutely no doubt the first incident was wood knocking. The second, however, seems to be less reassuring. The sound emitted, or heard, didn't sound too tree like, then again we are not experts on trees. There was an event, however, which seemed to strengthen the idea of it being wood knocking. While it was doing the noise, there was a pause. We then heard something relatively large move. Right afterwards, the wood noise began again. Could this have been Bigfoot? Well, it’s highly unlikely that a human would be waiting at the top of the mountain, waiting for other people to pass by every two hours or so, and start knocking on wood.
